New York City ... The "Big Apple"
All the wealth in the world has some connection to New York City. The Big Apple as it is often called is nothing short of a lie. It also referred to as the world capital. New York City is not just a city; it’s a symbol of our modern world.
It’s hard to put a finger on what makes New York City so delightful because of its sheer size and capacity. It’s become a large and important part of the global community making it difficult to pick just a few highlights. Café’s, restaurants, theaters, museums, landmarks: it doesn’t really matter what your idea of a good time is, New York City has it all!
New York City is located along the Eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean in North America. The city rests at the mouth of the Hudson River, a major transportation route in the North East. It was once the U.S. capital from 1789-1790 and the state capital until the year 1797.
In the beginning, Native Americans occupied the area we now know as New York City for more than 11,000 years until an explorer by the name Giovanni Da Verrazano arrived in 1524. Later down the road the English explorer Henry Hudson came across this untouched region. He claimed the land for the Dutch East India Company. Trade was then established.
In time New York became the property of Britain. Growing yearns for independence among the British colonies paved way for a Declaration of Independence. After declaring its Independence from Great Britain and by the time George Washington was sworn in as president of the new republic, New York was a thriving seaport of 33,000 people.
From its start the New York City was destine to become a great city. The city’s growth took off considerably early on. By 1790 New York City was the largest U.S. city. With the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 the city saw a sizeable expansion.
During the 19th and 20th centuries New York’s population increased at an explosive rate due to immigration. Immigrants were finding their way to Ellis Island in New York in search of freedom and new opportunities. After World War II many African Americans from the south, Puerto Ricans, and Latin Americans migrated to the city with the desire to work.
New York’s Greenwich Village is the essence of New York. It’s formation by immigrants from Italy, the west of Ireland, and by Americans gave rise to this beautiful community. It was here that scores of artists, writers, poets were born. Today this village is one of the few remaining areas in the city where the skyline is not littered by skyscrapers. The sunrise here is a sight not to be missed.
New York City is made of five boroughs separated by various waterways. They are: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island. In these boroughs you will find a mixture of race, industry, and landscape, making New York City one of the most diverse cities around. Today New York City has a population of around 7,500,000.
New York City is famous for its history, many attractions, and landmarks. Places like Carnegie Hall, New York Aquarium, The New York Botanical Garden, and much more are just a few places you can plan a visit in New York City.
The Empire State Building, once the tallest building in New York, is a limestone structure that stands proudly in the New York Skyline. The antenna atop this building was originally planned to be a mooring mast for zeppelins, but the Hindenburg tragedy ended that proposal. Central Park, filled with its lush vegetation, is a place to get away from the bustle of city life. The Statue of Liberty, a valued symbol of New York City and the USA can be visited on Ellis Island. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum on Modern Art are just some of the many museums that dot the city. A collection of forty-five films of New York can me found in the Library of Congress. There were made between the years 1898-1906.
New York City is filled with many fine restaurants including but not limited to: American cuisine, Austrian/German, Contemporary, Fish and Seafood, French, Greek, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Scandinavian, and more.
You can also visit New York’s most famous bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, or maybe catch a spectacular show at Radio City Music Hall. Checking out the neon lights in Time Square is sure to be exciting and worthwhile. Maybe your style is a trip to the United Nations HQ for a tour or taking a cruise down Wall Street, the money capital of the world. Whatever interest you, New York City is sure to have what you are looking for.
