Cancun is one of the
best destinations for the would-be tourist. The Cancun we know of today was
developed as a result of government investment in the tourism industry.
Cancun draws visitors because of its beautiful sea, great diving, and
proximity to the Maya ruins. Just sitting on the white sandy beaches and
gazing into the turquoise sea is an experience you wont’ soon forget.
Cancun’s
history is more than just a young tourist community, its history dates back
thousands of years. Cancun has many places where you can catch a glimpse of
this affluent past. The Mayas were the first to settle the Yucatan, where
Cancun is positioned, thousands of years ago. During their reign they
constructed beautiful and famous buildings. They ruled over the land until
about sixty years before the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors.
The Spanish arrived
and claimed the region which lead to the creation of Mexico. After this the
Yucatan area seemed to be ignored and forgotten. It wasn’t even given an
official territory name until the year 1902 when it was named after an army
general Andreas Quintana Roo.
For the next six
decades Cancun was a sleepy fishing village. The tourism industry was next
to nothing as the only tourist that did come only came to see the Yucatan
Peninsula’s charm of Merida. The only people at the time who visited the
coastline were individuals who chartered private planes to take them to
secluded coves and rocky shorelines for scuba diving.
But in
1961 the totally isolated Yucatan would be open to the outside world as
bridges and highways were completed that would give accessibility to the
area. A paved street bordered by wide sidewalks was installed down the
center of the island.
The
Mexican government decided to make Cancun a resort town. It already had
some of the ingredients of a resort town with its turquoise waters and
sparkling white sand. This home to the ancient Maya and later a refuge for
pirates fell into modern development as hotels and malls were built.
The
resort was opened in 1974. Also in 1974 Quintana Roo became a state.
During the 1980’s a building boom took place in Cancun which is still going
on today. Its full time residents have swelled to over 400,000. The city
attracts close to 3 million visitors annually including honeymooners and
spring breakers.
Today
Cancun is Mexico’s most popular tourist destination. The city is also a
great place to stay while visiting the Mayan ruins. It attracts visitors
from all over the world including the USA, Europe, and elsewhere.
Cancun lies directly
south of New Orleans on the northeast corner of the Yucatan peninsula in the
state of Quintana Roo. It runs 14 miles long but only one-quarter mile
wide. The lagoon separating Cancun from the mainland is Laguna Nichupte.
Cancun is the world’s first computer-created resort. Because of its awesome
weather, undeveloped beaches, and pristine environment a computer selected
Cancun as the perfect location for a new resort.
The
average daytime temperature in Cancun is 80 degrees Fahrenheit with only
about 5 degrees variation year round. September to the end of November is
the rainy season frequented by afternoon thunderstorms. You may experience
some chilly nights during the winter but nothing a lightweight sweater can
fix. The summers are hot and humid and are usually accompanied by frequent
but brief showers. The hottest time of the year is from mid-May through the
end of August when temperatures can reach a steaming 110 degrees
Fahrenheit. On average Cancun receives more than 250 sunny days a year.
While in
Cancun you’ll have a wide range of activities, events, and places to go.
